Irwin County was created on December 15, 1818. It was named for Governor Jared Irwin. The county's most famous incident happened during the Civil War. Confederate president Jefferson Davis was captured a mile north of Irwinville, by Union forces in 1865. County seat is located in Ocilla.
Irwin County is number 3 in the state in the percentage of land in farms and number 6 in the state in the amount of acreage devoted to cropland. Of the top ten commodities grown in Georgia, Irwin County produces 9 of them. Over 145,000 acres in Irwin County are designated to farm land.
